Hi,
My rising 8yo gelding seems to lack confidence when at competitions. He's fine in the warm up and works quite well but as soon as we get into the arena he goes all sluggish.
He was very green when I bought him 2 yrs ago and had not done much apart from hacking.
Is this something that will improve the more he does?
Is there anything I can do to help?
Thanks

Not sure what level you're riding at but my advice would be to keep it low-key and don't put him under too much pressure. You could try some unaffiliated walk and trot tests in outdoor arenas before moving on to unaff Prelim and during and after the tests give him heaps of praise. After the outdoor stuff - with hopefully some improvement - move him indoors. All the time, I'd make sure that during the warm-up phase he really is off your leg.

My gut feeling is that if you have a plan and get him out as much as possible, he will start to gain confidence. Good luck.
