| CentreLine 21/10/2008 15:55 | There are loads. Just make sure you know what's in them as sometimes they don't give you the ingredients - or rather the quantities of the active ingedient - and then I wonder how effective they are. At the top end of the market there is Blue Chip Dynamic which is a feed balancer for joints. Then there are products like Cortaflex from Equine America but, coming from America, I find the prices vary month to month according to the exchange rate and they tend to be expensive anyway. If you go into any store such as Country Farmers or SCATS you will see many many products to choose from. I guess you pay for what you get. |
| equichoice 27/11/2008 14:26 | I guess it depends what you want. My horse is on a balancer anyway, but also has NAF Superflex which is readily available. Cortaflex reckon their product has greater "bioavailability" than others - in other words that their product finds it easier to get through to the joint itself rather than getting lost in the horse's system. How much of that is truth and how much marketing I wouldn't like to say. |
| andrew1 01/12/2008 14:58 | So do you think this stuff is really necessary then? I'm new to the horse world and not too sure that the person who sold me the horse was'nt trying to con a few extra quid out of me for the supplements.... |
| merrythorpe 22/01/2009 14:53 | CentreLine is right, there are lots on the market and not being an equine dietry expert it would be difficult to know just how much would be absorbed at each feeding. As Equichoice wrote the absorbsion may vary and some horses may well absorb more than others. A common denominator seems to be that we all spend a fortune on what we think is best for our horses but many of us would not spend that on a supplement for ourselves. Incidentally my elderly mare is on Cortaflex and balancer, the others have just Equilibra balancer. |
| LegYield 28/01/2009 12:18 | Andrew1 has got a point. It's amazing how many supplements are out there in the market compared to around 10-15 years ago. The advertising makes us feel that we're not looking after our equines if we don't pump them full of powders and fluids. |
| maistar 22/09/2009 14:27 | I'm new to this site and have been browsing the forum. I would like to make a comment on Cortaflex from Equine America. My 14 year old Welsh Cob/Cleveland has been on the maintenance dose for nearly two years. He was appearing a bit stiff in his hocks, especially during shoeing, so i decided, after much research and questioning friends etc, to try this product. Its expensive to buy, but is good value if used at the correct dose. Anyway, unbeknown to my farrier i started Monty on the course just after his shoeing. On my farriers return 6 weeks later, he asked " what have you been doing to Monty"? puzzled i asked what he meant, " Monty is less stiff in his hind legs, he's finding it easier to bend for me to shoe" well, I said, he's been on cortaflex since your last visit, "well, its most definitely helping him" he said. So it appears to be helping Monty, and thats what matters. |
