How do you warm up your horse and how long do you take before competing?

I compete both affiliated and unaffiliated at dressage and eventing. Up until two years ago, my dressage was pretty awful. Much of the improvement I put down to the warm up. Basically, i became more focussed and what I was trying to achieve in the warm up and split it into three parts. 1. get the horse stretching to warm up his muscles 2. work in the outline with lots of transitions to get him off the leg and listening. 3. practice specific movements for the test.

As to how long it takes, for me its 30 mins but it depends on the horse. I always makes sure that my warm-up ends as I am about to go into the arena

There is a great feature in issue one of Just Dressage on controlling competition nerves which covers the warm up routine.

Hope this comment helps.

Have to say I did learn a lot from the magazine's article. Feel better having a plan. I only compete at unaffiliated and have been placed in the last two competitions so it's obviously working. Thanks very much for your help.

Warming up is extremely important for both you and your horse, warms both your muscles and helps you to focus on the task ahead. Its been very difficult this year for me and my horse due to the weather. We compete unaffiliated at local events but the warm up area at one in particular is a paddock. Here in the east we've had very little rain, so the ground is like concrete, hence making warming up practically impossible. The test takes place in a Turf Float arena and that is great. May I add that cooling down after your schooling or test is equally important.
